Sometimes life throws kids curveballs. The death of a loved one, medical procedures, even family transitions can be a challenge. Parents and other caregivers that interact regularly with them have irreplaceable wisdom about what's best for their child. But when these curveballs come, additional support can be a real help for the whole family. Child Life Specialists are a resource for families who've been thrown a curveball. Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLS) are trained in child development, family systems, stress and coping. A CCLS most often assists families with navigating and normalizing medical challenges. They are also found in other community settings; supporting kids, teens, and families who are dealing with stressful, traumatic, or atypical situations. I am familiar with a variety of evidence-based, developmentally appropriate strategies to empower your child (and you!) to cope in the midst of the curveballs.
I provide materials and opportunities for healthy emotional expression in creative and playful ways.
Whatever your curveball is, I can assess your child's understanding of it through play and tailor developmentally appropriate tools to help them face it with confidence.
Play is how children explore their world and express their understanding of it. When their world includes a curveball circumstance they haven't encountered before, I provide play opportunities for them to normalize it and explore the solutions they need.
If you see the curveball coming, I can help empower the family with knowledge and choices about how to engage with it. I equip caregivers with tools to advocate for the needs of their children.
