I moved to New Mexico with my family in 2017. I have spent the last twenty years raising four children in a home that includes transracial and international adoption, physical disability and mental illness. I met a child life specialist for the first time when my son (11 at the time) had surgery at UNM children’s hospital. After some more research, I decided that I wanted to be a certified child life specialist (CCLS) ‘when I grew up.’ As I pursued the education and clinical experience required for my certification, I found a framework that made sense of how children develop. I began to understand the research that explains why I'm so effective at engaging children of all ages and putting them at ease.
As a child life specialist, I demystify experiences, enable children’s choices, and cultivate their resilience. I partner with adult caregivers and empower them to support their children in challenging circumstances. I create a relational space in the midst of difficulty that offers children and their caregivers the respect, empathy, and compassion every human deserves.
